Rick Ross And Meek Mill: Tupac Back

By Odeisel

Tupac has been dead for almost 15 years, but let some tell it, he’s alive in Cuba wearing the new Jordans that came out after he “died.” You can hold on to that if you’d like, but for those of us who have accepted Makaveli’s fate, Rick Ross and Philly’s favorite Meek Mill got something for your ass. “Tupac Back.”

Those snares are still there as are the digital strings but they are well arranged and doing major damage on your eardrums. The stabbing strings create big drama amidst quirky sound effects and heavy 808’s.  Think Lex Luger with self-control, minus the excess escalating noise and off sequence sound effects.

Ross is husky on this, with strong presence and precision delivered lines. There are no wasted words and everything is hard.  He interpolates a couple ‘Pac songs into the chorus as homage and lets everybody know that Maybach Music isn’t trying to replace Tupac but to reintroduce that feeling of what’s going to happen next that permeated the air whenever Shakur was around.

Meek playfully gives homage with the similar cadence and the Hennessey/enemy couplets that were present throughout Pac’s songs. Meek christens Philly the new Iraq (at this point that might be more a compliment than a statement of how bad it’s getting). He provides a nice fluid balance to Ross’ aggression and they trade bars smoothly.

Unlike other cats who sign people and you never see any work, Rick Ross got everyone on Maybach Music out in them streets keeping the fans fed. More joints like this and the wins will keep on coming.
