DJ Premier & Nick Javas: Fighting The Ghost Of Guru And Protecting Your Name

By Odeisel

Sometimes friends argue and fight. One of the things with brotherhood is that the familiarity you develop sometimes does lead to contempt. Sometimes you need a break. And even when things aren’t going well, you always figure in the back of your mind that things will work themselves out and that sooner or later, things will be back to normal.

DJ Premier and Guru never got the chance to mend the fences built up between them. That chance was destroyed when Guru lost his life last year, after a few years of animus between them. But the world doesn’t stop and you have to move on. But what happens when indeed you do? Will the audience be receptive fo any work between him and another artists consistently paired?

Nick Javas has cast his lot with DJ Premier. As such, he’s got an immense Gangstarr catalog to deal with in terms of the fans and what they have come to expect from a consistent partnership with DJ Premier. How does Nick look at their relationship and does he in fact even desire to match up with it? Is that pressure there, and is he willing to deal with it? We asked him to his face. You’ll be surprised by the answer he gives.

We ask Primo how he handles legends who perhaps aren’t giving it their all in the booth. How do you tell someone like Rakim that his performance isn’t up to the standard that he has represented for the bulk of his career. Do you have the confidence in your own abilities as a producer to tell someone that they need to raise their bar in order to complete a project? We asked Premier that question and he answered straight without blinking. Take heed to his answer along with an anecdote regarding Mary J Blige, Chaka Khan and how even the best can be challenged and be made to improve. DJ Premier. Nick Javas. Planet Ill. Enjoy.
