Innocent Bystander Rule Their Own Makeshift Kingdom

By Odeisel

Canada is serious about its Hip-Hop, and not just the pop variety. Sweatshop Union, a Canadian Hip-Hop collective, has been grinding it out in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade, touring with the Black Eyed Peas, Swollen Members and the Living Legends as well as opening shows for Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, and The Roots. Their newest track, “Makeshift Kingdom” from member group Innocent Bystander is the lead song from their coming work, The Bill Murray EP.

Producer Pigeon Hole delivers a steady diet of synthesizer and thump. There is a four scale guitar lick over a hard punching drum and ambient lows that come and go through the track. There is some remnant G-Gunk whine similar to that back ground of “Natural Born Killas” that give a nostalgic familiarity.

The group is known for socially relevant rhymes and this song is no exception, you don’t get out of the first few bars without hearing “Africa Rising, Middle East churning, we don’t give a fuck, let the griddle keep burning.” The duo is mushroom tripping through the fired of hell, fighting for truth and enduring the fire. (their ideas not my prose). The two emcees, Mos Eisley and Conscience have distinctly different flows and deliveries that fit well together.

Innocent Bystander manages to fit current events and global situations on the same tracks with metaphysical other-worldy ideals without sounding like weirdoes or spaced-out drug addicts. That’s an accomplishment. Looking forward to hearing more from them on the way to the Bill Murray EP.
