Jasmine Sullivan Isn’t A Robot, But She May Be A Quitter

By shelz.

A few days ago Jazmine Sullivan retired from music to go find herself.  She said the business wasn’t fun anymore and she didn’t know who she was without a mic and she was going to go figure out some stuff.  While I do agree with self- exploration and tweaking the path you want to walk, I always wonder why these tweets usually come on the tail end of a bad sales week.

Now she has released a song that could possibly be the last one we get from her, “I’m Not a Robot.” She tackles a common theme here.  I’m in a daze.  My life is process and procedure.  I’m not living.  I’m just on an empty holding pattern with no color. Everything is grey.  Please save me.

The track sounds like something Mary J Blige could work; mid-tempo digital ambiance with a smattering of drums and some low thump.  Sullivan has a huge helping of digital enhancement and her delivery at points is close to monotone.  I guess that’s to drive home the whole robot theme. I’m not really happy with this song, but maybe that’s because the construction is so closed, Sullivan doesn’t really get a chance to sing and the track isn’t dope enough to be the focal point.

So there you go.  She’s not a robot and she wants Jane to turn off this crazy thing off before she overheats.  Is it a real disenchantment with the business or is she just unhappy with her first week sales?  I don’t know.  However, she has since deleted the retirement tweets so maybe the business all of the sudden became fun again.  Or maybe she lacks impulse control.  She’s not a robot and I guess after this shes not a singer either.  Enjoy.
