Illside Radio 1/21/2011: Greatest Diss Records Of All Time…And The Worst

By Odeisel

The Planet, along with Chicago’s own Square-One of B-Side Radio, have joined forces to bring you the week in review in Hip-Hop and current events, along with the occasional special guest and some music to keep you moving through your day.

This week’s episode deals with the diss record. Foxy Brown’s recent “Massacre” record was the inspiration of this topic and we go through the history of some of Hip-Hop’s greatest battles.

We look at the diss wars between Death Row and Eazy-E and Luke Skywalker. We look at the Kool Moe Dee versus LL Cool J and who really won the war. Was 2nd Round KO the greatest diss record of all time? What was Canibus’ biggest mistake in the battle? What was LL’s legacy as a rapper in relation to those battles.

We take a look at the Jay-Z/Nas lyrical war and its effect of battles on wax and the subliminal shots that went on long before the public realized what was going on. How far is too far to go when you’re going after someone on wax? Did “Super Ugly” or “Hit ‘Em Up” push past that limit.

Was Common wrong for setting it off on Westside Connection? Even though he was the overwhelming victor, was “I Used to Love H.E.R.” a hating song? Did the West Coast have a right to be angry?

How do you keep beef on record and not allow it to spill over into the street? Can we take disses like Hammers’ “Run Boy Run” and Tim Dog’s “Fuck Compton” and Benzino’s Eminem disses even be taken seriously? What effect does the video have on diss records. All this and more on the latest episode of IllSide Radio.

Sit back, relax and take a ride on the Ill Side.
