Planet Ill Breakdown: Virtuoso Feat. Sir DZL, Vast Aire and Pidi T-Bay Of Pigs

By shelz.

With his next album The Final Conflict scheduled for release at the end of this month, Boston battle phenomenon Vitusoso has given up a single to get you ready.  “Bay of Pigs” comes equipped with some slick, theatrical production courtesy of Blue Sky Black Death and lyrical help from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and Vast Aire. It’s enough to make you want to plop down the LP asking price.  True story.

The song, named for a failed attempt by US backed Cuban expatriates to overthrow Castro’s government, is rife with violent metaphor, but also suggests success.  So I guess these dudes see themselves as Castro and not Kennedy.  The streets are the battle ground.  The rappers are soldiers and their words are their weapons.  It’s not a rare theme, but the crew pulls it out well.

The production manages darkness without all that squiggly horror movie synth which is a win all in itself.  The piano kicks it off over an uncomfortable hum of bass.  There are strings and hazy buried vocals.  Bells ring above as scratches sneak in and out below. Well done.

Virtuoso kicks it off already at code red.  Dead bodies in ditches, black spots on the sun, eyes hanging out of heads and that’s just his first few bars.  Bottom line is you don’t stand a chance.  Put your mic down and go home.  Then to add insult to injury he brought friends.  Next up is Vast Aire.

He’s a little less gruff than Virtuoso.  His laid back delivery speaks to his competition’s irrelevance.  He will black and blue your face, strangle you, then rip off your leg and crack your head open with a half smile on his face.  All in a day’s work.  Del closes the massacre down.

Sir DZL rips through metaphors about his murderous flow.  He eats lesser rappers for a living.  He’s as precise as a missile, as destructive as a tornado and strikes fear in emcee’s hearts whether they admit it or not.  It’s quite the trio.

I’m not sure about the hook, but it’s a small issue.  The last minute of the song drives home the point strictly with the production.  It’s lush, ominous and a warning and a half for your ass that this team isn’t fukkin with you.  Jump into the “Bay of Pigs” cipher if you’re feeling froggy.  I wouldn’t suggest it though.
