Travis Barker’s first “solo” endeavor, Give The Drummer Some should be right around the corner, and as we creep up to the release Barker has decided to unleash a second song from the LP, “Carry It.” It’s more rock in spirit than the first single with The Cool Kids, “Jump Down,” but just as hype.
“Carry It” starts with a mono section that’s sure to bring out a few frowns, but give it a second. The stereo will kick in just in time for you to get a piece of the drum mixed with a looped guitar riff courtesy of Tom Morello and some electro blips and bleeps disrupted by a scratch. This song continues to build quickly to welcome RZA.
The Abbott is at level 10 when he starts, dropping a driving narrative full of threat and hubris. He’s going to rain strikes all over you, pillage your village and leave you wishing you never met him. He demands you carry his Uzi, but I think the point is that you can’t, lame. Even though he’s rapping, there is a rock vibe to his delivery. The track is a mere suggestion not always accepted as he paints outside the lines to let you know his words outrank staying on beat.
Raekwon balances out RZA’s frenzy with his smoky, laid-back delivery on the second verse. The theme is similar. His folks are generals. Yours are grunts. You DJ backyard barbecues. He does stadium rock and if you don’t stop running your mouth, he’ll bust you in the head with Morello’s guitar.
RZA closes the Wu contribution with a nod to Chuck D for the inspiration and then runs through a flurry of word play emerging at the other end as an official metaphor whore. Morello is then given the floor and manages to take the energy up yet another notch as Barker beats out a proper foundation.
“Carry It” is a great ode to the fusion that many artists have problems delivering well. It’s not perfect, but could definitely serve as a blueprint for your next rap/rock project when you graduate from backyard parties. Good luck.
