Planet Ill Breakdown: 2 Hungry Bros Feat. Likwuid-Tithes At The Funeral

By shelz.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, 2 Hungry Bothers have dropped the Open Buffet mixtape.  Praise Hip-Hop and pass anything but the expected food flips.  I know folks love their idioms and metaphors and everything, but that’s a little too obvious for me.

Anyway, buried deep in the belly of this beat beast is a short and sweet piece called “Tides At the Funeral.”  And if you think it’s about having a home-going service on the beach, you would be wrong. Thank goodness.

Deep and Ben Boogz take a simple thump that at times, stutters and at others disappears, and smear it with some looped Shaw Brothers atmospherics that prepare you properly for walking into the temple to see some martial artistry at its ass kicking best.  However, instead of Shaolin monk you get Likwuid; a SC born and bred femcee who is pretty capable of eating up the competition and spitting them out, on the lyrical tip that is.

She drops some passionate and thoughtful bars about religion vs. spirituality and then grabs the Hip-Hop market and brings the hypocrisy full circle.   She speaks on process and procedure devoid of any heart and how some artists would rather sell their soul to the devil than fail in the business.  Interesting

The only problem I have with this song is it’s too short; but you can’t have your cake and eat it too, whatever that means.  So pull up to the table and enjoy some of the 2 Hungry Brothers goodness before it’s all gone.

  1. My engineer not being the English & Theology Major that I am, on 2 occasions corrected and sent out the song that was originally Tithes at Funeral into Tides at a Funeral.
Tithes. Not your fault guys. But doesn’t tithes at a funeral make more sense in terms of what she is talking about. Thanks Odiesel
