The Black Eyed Peas Continue Their Pop Wizardry With The Dirty Bit

By Odeisel

The Black Eyed Peas took a leap of evolution once they added Fergie all those years ago and they’ve been unstoppable ever since. Driven by the undeniable production of Will.I.Am, they have reeled off a slew of infectious hits. While some shake their heads at the Peas’ departure from the yellow brick road of conventional Hip-Hop, their wizardry lies in their ability to combine easy to learn rap lyrics with incredible thumping beats and pop appeal. Their multiracial composition allows everyone to share in their party. If you thought their run was slowing, you’re sadly mistaken. Their new track, “The Dirty Bit” is another club banger that will be anthemized before its run in over.

The track begins with an ode to the late great Patrick Swayze with an interpolation of the Dirty Dancing classic “Time of My Life.” With partner Jennifer Grey still alive on “Dancing With the Stars” and a sentimental favorite, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Once that opening stanza releases, the track opens up to synth-driven thump and an electro bassline. Tough drums and digital distortion give flavor while the faint addition of autotune aids the crooning of the group. Digital strings exert on the breaks and then the dirty part returns. The track adds and drops elements along the way and breaks up for mini choruses to halt any monotony from forming and so the club crowd can get a breather and the DJ can cut the audio and make them scream. It’s precision pop at its finest.

Lyrically there’s nothing special here and the flow is the basic club flow that anyone this side or Ke$ha or Flo Rida can ape, but that’s the point: to make you feel that you too can be a star while you’re drunk or pilled up in the club. Sing along, scream at the top of your lungs and most important, shake your ass. Mission accomplished.

The Black Eyed Peas have crowd control down to a science. They know exactly how to move your ass and make you learn their music and dance to it and there’s nothing you can do about it. Have the time of your life. “Dirty Bit.” Enjoy.
