Planet Ill Breakdown: Reek Da Villain Feat. Swizz Beatz X DJ Khaled X Busta Rhymes X Vado X Camron X Method Man X Nelly-Mechanics (Remix)

By Odeisel

“Bring The Pain” was Method Man’s lead single from his debut album Tical. The video was a visceral trip through some really wild stuff and brought the promise of Method Man as just the next stage of rap evolution. While that didn’t exactly pan out on the solo tip, the track was mean as hell and it was only a matter of time before someone dug it up and put it back to work in some form. Who would have thought it would be Reek Da Villain? Reek, along with Dj Khaled, Swizz Beatz, Busta Rhymes, Cam’ron, Vado, Method Man himself and Barack Obama (just kidding about Barry.)  combine for the “Mechanics” Remix.

The beat features Jerry Butler’s vocal sample from the classic “Mechanical Man.” Which adds some depth and some soul to the mix. That humming  and the basic construction from “Bring The Pain” is preserved and accented with a Blues guitar sample.

Reek does an okay job holding down the force on his own track but his performance pales before a couple of the vets. You wonder how Swizz Beatz weaseled his way into another one of these posse cuts when he just can’t rap. I just can’t take him seriously as a rapper. DJ Khaled ad libs and announces each rapper Bussa Bus alters his cadence from his normal manic presence. It isn’t his tough guy flow either but it does melt on the track. Vado delivers a similar performance to Reek in that he doesn’t really blow your mind but doesn’t deliver a weak performance.

The real stars of this track are Cam’ron, who interpolates Method Mans original verse from “Bring The Pain” and drops a few clever lines including one that gives a nod to Tunnel-runner Peter Gatien. Method Man gives the most domineering and best performance on the track, flaunting his obvious familiarity with the track and moving with the rhythm like a marriage. Nelly closes the song out with a surprisingly tough verse that stakes his claim in the game as one of the biggest rappers ever with “I’m the biggest selling rapper alive/ not caucasian , blond hair or blue eyes.” How ‘bout that?

The track can do without Swizz and Khaled but it’s dope. Props to Method Man for…bringing the pain. *Ducks. Enjoy.
