Planet Ill Breakdown – Gorillaz Feat. Daley-Doncamatic (All Played Out)

By shelz.

The Gorillaz have decided to pay tribute to a relic of beat making, the Donca Matic.  It was one of the first drum machines produced by the good folks at Korg back in the 60’s and is partially responsible for all the synthetic music you hear today.  Take that as you will.

So of course “Doncamatic (All Played Out)” is full of funky electro goodness.  I don’t know if they actually used a Donca Matic in the production, as I’m sure this huge monstrosity that looks a little like a compact fridge with a keyboard on top is probably pretty difficult to get your hands on.  Either way it’s an enjoyable wisp of past meets present sure to cause some radio commotion when it’s released in November.

The open bounces around with what sounds like an accordion on a pogo stick.  Just imagine what Tigger’s tail would sound like if it made music. The electro boing boing  flows into the rest of the track with some spacey laser adornments and is soon joined by the vocalist Daley who sounds like he’s two cigarettes away from a fully formed smoky delivery.

It’s cute and easy on the ears. Daley sings of taking your grind down at the end of the day and just mellowing into a restful evening.  It’s head nod, feel good funk on the electronic tip.  Probably just like the early 60’s purveyors of plastic music hoped it would be one day.  Good job Albarn and company.  I’m sure the people at Korg are loving it as much as your fans are.
