Nicki Minaj Takes Lil Kim To The Woodshed On “Roman’s Revenge”

By Odeisel

If there is one thing that Nicki Minaj has proven a master of, it’s timing and strategy.  She has timed every move she has made to perfection, whether it be abandoning the chick in the hallway rapping for stacks aesthetic to taking the high road during her dust up with Lil Kim (more on that shortly), to hopping off the Gucci Mane and them ship of management and onto the S.Ss. Diddy (although she’s still doing much of her own blowing up, herself). While so many rappers drop their best stuff on mixtapes and leave their albums full of subpar material, it looks like Minaj has saved her good stuff for the money. Her latest features everyone’s favorite cosigner, a back from wack Eminem, on her latest, “Roman’s Revenge.”

The track has a ton of space ship noises including puffs of smoke that give you the feel of a soon to blast off rocketship, symbolic of both Nicki’s career and the vitriol she has in store for forebear-turned-nemsis, Lil Kim. Apparently those slights were not forgotten and rather than wasting a response on a worthless tape or a dumbass YouTube vid, the Disabitch Barbie saved it for the album with guns ablazing.

While Kim’s name is not mentioned, it’s impossible not to recognize her as the target of nicki’s venom. There is certainly some fire and “woooow” moments, but Nicki’s off kilter, split personality style which is usually to her advantage, detracts from the continuity of her disses. You don’t get to savor them because she keeps moving her voice and delivery. I don’t know about physically threatening Kim or sayin she got cats in Brooklyn ready to take her top off, but Kim’s position as an emcee is definitely put on blast. She better either come with some fire or walk away and not say anything.

Eminem owns the track with a slew of malicious lines that flow so close to the edges of the beat that they are almost totally in synch. He’s been raging on the mic for over a decade, so this kind of song is him at home and while his target is anonymous this time (or is it?) it makes the verses he drops no less face-in-palm damaging. Perhaps his best performance in years.

“Roman’s Revenge” is clearly the shot in the arm Minaj needed to silence detractors and get people to think that perhaps there is a reason aside from histrionics and Barbie hysteria to support her album. If there is more of this on there, her preeminent position as top female mainstream rapper is more than a pole position, but a deserved one.
