Nicki Minaj Interpolates Prince In An Attempt To Blow Your Mind

By shelz.

The hard core Hip-Hop traditionalists are starting to come to terms with the new wave of artists and their less than throwback style.  Some folks believe it’s not recognition and that the masses have stopped complaining because they feel defeated.  Either way, it’s here and resistance is futile.

One of the leaders of the brigade is Nicki Minaj and at this point if you fuss about her presence you look like an old curmudgeonly rap geriatric case.  Since she’s the lone rapper carrying the mainstream femcee torch, you might look like a woman hater as well.  Buck up kid.  If it makes you feel any better, The Planet is always honest about what we hear and “Blow Your Mind” isn’t all that great.

It’s a tagged up joint from some new mixtape, so I guess someone in Minaj’s camp agrees with me. The foundation is a weird combination of an interpolation of Prince’s “Darlin’ Nicki” and an electro dancehall section that sounds like it could be a throw away from one of Timbaland’s Missy sessions. And as always there is a snare that leads from verse to hook.

Minaj has removed the schizophrenia from her delivery, leaving a bubbling smugness that comes through with contempt for those who just don’t get it. She likes money; hers and others.  She doesn’t like drunkards because the liquid courage makes dudes think they have a chance when they don’t and umm… I guess that’s it really. There’s a lot going on in this song but very little of it is decent lyricism. Plus it’s always risky when she raps straight since that crazy ass delivery is the only reason we continue to listen to her.

There is an energy to the track that makes the tune club worthy, but Nicki may want to reconsider her disdain for drunk people because those are the folks who will be rocking to this in the club.  Lyrics connoisseurs and traditionalists who haven’t completed their new millennium Hip-Hop 12 step program, should beware.  This will just give you something else to complain about.
