Plant Ill Breakdown: Bruno Mars Featuring Damian Marley-Liquor Store Blues

By shelz.

Bruno decided to get real authentic with his island collaboration.  Jamaica is doubled up in this piece about smoking and drinking the depression away.  Supa Dups, who has moved seamlessly from Mary J Blige to Eminem without catching the glare of the spotlight pulls beat making duties while Jr. Gong, our favorite Marley du jour is on the feature post.  What Mars may have lacked on the bonafide Caribbean front, he more than makes up with his co-conspirators on “Liquor Store Blues.”

Mars’ recent arrest may turn this song into some weird foreshadowing, but criminal issues aside it’s enjoyable to listen to based solely on its sonic merits.  It’s not hardcore enough to turn off casual reggae listeners, nor is it pop enough to seem watered down.  Dups versatility manages a pretty decent blend.

Mr. Mars tells a common story of deriving some comfort from the bottle and the bud in a world of dead ends and little to no opportunity.  He sounds good, as usual.  He considers the subject and adds a little push to the emotion in his voice.  Jr. Gong echoes Bruno’s sentiment suggesting the booze and bud make him feel like Superman, a welcome change from the hole he normally finds himself in.

It’s not grand in its conception or its delivery, but nothing Mars does is.  He’s on the road to being a good capable artist.  This song is yet another step on the way to that destination.
