Kid Cudi continues his road towards his second commercial release with the new single, “Do You Get It”. The song finds Cudi more in traditional rap mode than perhaps at any point on his entire first opus and features him giving you the real pronunciation of his last name (finally).

Voicing similar reasons to Lebron James, Cudi tells the story of why he left Cleveland, following the pull of his heart and his art (and the pretty girls), pushing the school books aside for mic skill studies. Throughout the song he asks, “Do You get It?” pondering if all of his soul baring on the mic is worth it and whether he’s accomplishing his goal. He delves deeper, noting the loss of his father as a turning point in his life and a significant factor in how things began to deteriorate in his life. He wonders aloud why people worry more about his weed or his alcohol consumption or how he is dressed and are less concerned about how good his album is.

As he ascends in stature with regards to the music, he’s still confronted with the demons of his drug abuse. Upon his return to Cleveland he has put the city on his back, standing up for the pride of Cleveland and representing properly. That city has taken a beating in the wake of certain “decisions” and a response like this is good for the morale of the hood.

The beat features a rumbling thump and a whiney synth that populates the chorus. A gunclappy drum supports the bulk of the rhythm and Cudi rides on it ably, with nary a note of his singing. No matter what the boys in South Beach say, Cleveland rocks, so sayeth Kid Cudi. It will be interesting to see what approach he takes on his coming album. Do You Get It? Enjoy
