Planet Ill Breakdown: Lloyd Banks-Reach Out

By Odeisel

Lost in all the hoopla of G.O.O.D. Friday is Lloyd Bank’s own promotion Blue Friday. He’s been going at it solo, strengthening his brand without the help of mentor 50 Cent or any real G-Unit branding, which is interesting in itself but probably necessary if he’s going to brow and avoid any negativity associated with 50. It’s been working so far. While flying under the radar, Banks has been gaining momentum heading towards his Hunger For More 2 album. His latest track “Reach Out” will not be on the album but gives a good look at what Banks has left in the tank.

The muddled, cloudy beat contains elements of the same sample used by Black Sheep for their debut single “Flavor Of The Month.” The horns and bring elements are removed leaving only that deep distorted bass. Booming drums and a somber voice sample add color to the track. There are short key chops throughout and various sound effects.

Lloyd Banks’ voice has changed and is no longer as flat. Its newfound raspyness ads some emotion that wasn’t there before and that opens up a few avenues to Banks as a performer that perhaps he didn’t have previously. His hard time rhymes speak of a hood rife with prostitution, murder, vandalism and lost childhoods. Banks remembers losing his best friend to the streets while he was enjoying the spoils of success and living with no limit. One thing that remains is his desire to continue hard-charging through life and refusing to allow those same streets to call him back. No glitz, no R&B hook and no candy.  Just grit. Simple yet effective. “Reach Out”. Enjoy.
