Planet Ill Breakdown: Lloyd Banks-King/Do My Thing

By Odeisel

Many times an artist will aim for the heater or the pop crossover. There is something to say for having the patience to craft a single designed to feed the fan base and follow a narrative. Lloyd Banks is fresh off the gold certified “Beamer Benz or Bentley” and the “Any Girl” single with former Murda Inc. artist Lloyd. His latest, as part of his running Blue Friday promotion, “King/Do My Thing” is a strong mid album feel track that mixes a dope beat with strong rhymes that are not aimed for the club or the radio.

The slow beat features a double snare and string instruments are paced by a wailing flute-like chipmunked soul sample. An undercurrent of keyboards and a boom bap drum complement Banks crooning chorus (don’t cringe, it’s melodically delivered but not actually sung).

Banks is lyrically there and actually employs a couple of flows here, breaking out into a double time flow for the third verse that I haven’t heard him use before. The haters gotta eat it because he’s still getting money, and the streets respect his lyrical talent. He loves his team and he’s out there with bling to shine in the hater’s faces. He’s got the car and the house and the girls. It’s not that what exists here is spell binging, but it’s good to hear a change of pace song in terms of rhythm that isn’t a flat out appeal for sales.

This song won’t make Lloyd Banks a “King” per se but it is certified bumpable. Enjoy.
