And The Beat Goes On: Shakira Gets Crazy, JD Gets Hammered And Mickey Factz Gets The Cookies

By shelz.

It’s been a strange week folks.  T.I. and Tiny got caught with his and hers X pills. Chippy D says that the mainstream work that totally wasn’t her goal when she decided to do porn is starting to roll in anyway and all of a sudden she’s interested, folks are fighting in the stands at the U.S. Open and it looks like Plaxico Burress is going to do every day of that two year sentence as the state of New York believes he’s way too dangerous to allow out on work release.  Oh well, at least he didn’t get a 7-time-felon-buying-lots-of-illegal-guns sentence like T.I.  Wait.  T.I. didn’t get that either.  Never mind.

One thing we do get from week to week is an email box full of work from folks who believe in making the recording process as easy as possible by snatching someone else’s tracks (no Beyonce) and dropping a word or two on top.  Today we’re dealing mainly in Hip-Hop, with some South American flavor thrown in for good measure.  Nero reworks J. Cole, Mickey Factz gives his best take on Usher and Donny Goines gets Diddy with it.  So let’s get started.  First up is Shakira.

“Loca” is the first single released from Shakira’s impending album Sal el Sol.  The song is a cover of “Loca Con Su Tiguere” by El Carta.  Never heard of him?  Don’t feel bad.  I haven’t either.  The song has a weird stutter in the thump, but the digital drag of the horn and the layered drums are cool.  I’m not a huge fan of this but I’m sure some will like it.

Next up is Mickey Factz working over Usher’s “Hot Tottie.”  Toddie?  Todey? Who knows?  Every time this song pops up its spelled differently. Factz pays some homage to Big, suggests he gets paid top dollar to ghostwrite and gives a shout to my favorite cookies.  Even if you aren’t feeling his flow which sounds like its straight from the pulpit, you have to love Keebler shortbread cookies.

Moving on we have Donny Goines on Diddy’s “Hello, Good Morning.” Every time I hear Mr. Goines, I hear something new as well as what worked for him the last time he stepped out.  So I guess that’s what you would call artist development, if that existed anymore.  There’s nothing mind blowing here, but his lighthearted mood suggest he wasn’t planning on dropping anything too serious.  He plays with some metaphors and some new delivery techniques.  Take a listen.

Jermaine Dupri comes at #4 with another ode to Rick Ross who is obviously JD’s favorite rapper.  It’s a shame Diddy beat him to the Boss, but at least he can lay rhymes down on all of his tracks.  This week we have “BMF” with a bit of JD upgrade.  Recently Jermaine has reminded me of the Wizard of Oz after the curtain was pulled back, exposed and underwhelming.  This song does nothing to change that.

Nero pulls up the rear with some bars over J. Cole’s “Blow Up.”  This yodel ish is funny as hell to me.  It’s all I listen for when I hear this so, while I can tell you Nero was on the song, I can’t tell you what I said.  What’s Hip-Hop coming to when dudes start rapping over Ricolla commercials? One thing I did notice is that of the 5 songs selected, two of the artists mentioned Kat Stacks. Say what you want about that chick, she’s a bigger star than you.
