And The Beat Goes On: Nas, H.O.P.E and Killa Kyleon Tap The Classics

By shelz.

I would say it’s been an interesting week, but aren’t all of them?  The odd happenings are different, but usually there is something going on that makes you glad you are relatively sane. Shaq allegedly tried to hack into one of his employee’s computers and plant kiddy porn on his hard drive, Jim Jones and Cam are still throwing rocks at the throne and some guy is writing a tell all book that is expected to contain some steamy tidbits about Mariah Carey.  So I guess we can expect another horrible rap song from Slick Nick protecting his wife’s honor from those she used to do the nasty with.

Anyway, let’s move on to our favorite boosted production of the week.  Whether you can it a freestyle (which we all know it’s not) or a remix (which we all know it’s not) it’s pilfering nonetheless.  We still love you though.  First up are Carlos Santana and Nas.

Carlos Santana is unleashing his Guitar Classics album and one of his cover collaborations involves AC/DC, Nas and some girl who sounds like an 80’s backup singer.  The product is “Back in Black” Santana style.  AC/DC should protest.   I hate to say it because I’m a huge fan of both artists, but the performance is overwrought.  The singer shouldn’t be there and Nas is kind of meh. It is an overall non-win for all involved.

Moving on, we have Yelawolf dropping some really interesting bars over Scoop Deville’s “I Wanna Rock.” Yelawolf’s delivery is measured aggression with random pops. His style works better with a speedier flow so the adlibs might be on some ADD ish like he gets bored in between lines. It’s odd, but he’ll keep your attention.  Who knew Sybil would have this kind of love in new millennium Hip-Hop?

Next we have H.O.P.E  featuring Chase N Cashe over Nas’ “Street Dreams.”  I don’t know one rapper from the other, nor could I tell if there were really two or three.  And what does “polly” mean?  I’m not sure if I like this, but I do know the first dude had some cute punchlines.  Take a listen and tell us what you think.

Now we have Killa Kyleon & Marcus Manchild making use of Goodie MOB’s “Cell Therapy.” Maybe I’m a little hesitant to like this because Soul Food is one of my favorite albums ever.  Or maybe I’m hesitant to like this because it’s not that good.  Who knows? I’ve listened to this song five times and haven’t heard a single thing they’ve said.  You’re on your own.

Closing things out, we have NiadaFoxx adding a few notes to Drake’s “Say You Will.’  She has a good voice and this track is brilliant in its ambiance even if the bleeps remind you of an IV drip.  It’s short, but nice.  This chick is another artist in the DMV’s crowded market.  It’s going to be hard for anyone to rise out of that huge pool, but I wish her luck.
