Planet Ill Breakdown: Stalley-Babblin’

By Odeisel

The organic energy coming out of DD172 is something that can’t be denied. There is talent that is quietly being melded alongside veterans under the eyes of Ski and Dash. While the movement has flown high with Curren$y and Wiz’s star has begun to get some serious momentum, Stalley has remained grounded, still incubating and honing his craft.  His newest joint, I got courtesy of my sister across the pond over at Soul Culture.

“Babblin” with a video directed by 2-Cents and shot in the 9th ward featuring New Orleans native Jay Electronica, is a jazzy number that exposes a different side of Stalley musically. The images of rows of houses still in disheveled states five years after the Karina related floods make it abundantly clear that there is still much work to do down there. Those stark images juxtaposed against the touristy  party atmosphere readily apparent in the French Quarter say more than I can about the disparity between the two areas in terms of importance to the powers that be. Yet there is no defeatist element to this video;  children are vibrant, old folks are alive and the people still survive.

Musically the music is very laid back but active, with a dancing bassline and brass horns pusing the rhythm atop a lively vibraphone. The combination suits both the video and Stalley’s mellow delivery. His voice is low with a sandy rear projection that is low- key whisper at times, but clearly audible. The flow is a bit stream of consciousness with a spoken word edginess to it. In all, well done and another brick on the façade of the new house Dame is building. Stalley shows skill, poise and talent and for music lovers the live jazzy instrumentation feel is something uncommon that you can embrace. Stalley. “Babblin.” Enjoy.
