Planet Ill Breakdown: Lil Wayne Feat. Drake-Right Above It

By Odeisel

Lil Wayne is nearing the stretch run of his prison sentence and should probably be released any week now. In that time he was in, he’s dropped multiple mixtapes, a documentary helmed by DJ Scoob Doo, and numerous prerecorded guest spots.  Confiscated iPods, fired/suspended C.O.s and phoned in freestyles have colored his relatively short stint at Rikers, where he may not have been cooling or wilding, but a fair amount of smiling. He’s dropped a new morsel to tide you over until he hits the streets again. “Right Above It.”

Drake opens up the track like he does most of their collaborations, with this one thankfully bereft of autotune (because then you can’t tell them apart from each other with similar deliveries).  He employs his patented punch-line setups and tries to drop a bit of wisdom regarding fake friends and watching out for them haters. He keeps his circle tight, but he hits the strip club with regularity and when he’s there, the poles are full and he takes them in twos (because singular sex is so last millennium). Drizzy has halted the champagne diet and is sipping soda (better hangover I suppose). Compact Drake verse X.  Loses effectiveness when stacked against a myriad of similar output but nice enough when viewed on its own merit.

Weezy F. goes for the jugular like he does on all cleanup verses as if to say respect Drizzy, he’s the prince, but the king rules. Weezy don’t bust back because he shoots first and he in the building you just on the guestlist. His no writing style is apparent in his bar construction and its loose chaotic fluidity. There is an abundance of line setups devoid of the whole simile structure (guns change you boys into pussies…sex change) that plagues limited punchline rappers. Through the duration of his verse you can hear bursts of machine gun fire and suwoops (if you banging) muttered, probably with the intent of creating a ready for war atmosphere.

The beat is very Young Money-ish and in truth the song could be swapped out with “Miss Me” from the Drake album and the only thing you’d actually miss would be the chorus of the latter. It’s still dope though and another good record from the duo who really should consider doing a group effort album. “Right Above It.” Enjoy.
