Planet Ill Breakdown: Diddy Feat. Lil Wayne and Justin Timberlake-Shades

By shelz.

A flick of a lighter and a long inhale welcome you to 6 minutes of “Shades.” Wayne is first up to bat.  The foundation is strictly atmospherics; rolling digital special effects and puffs of melody.  Wayne isn’t rapping; it’s more like spoken word.  A layer of strings are added to the track while he fumbles with his words, explaining why she’s the one.  Then it crumbles.

The beat regains consciousness with the slow patter of a heartbeat bassline.  Next is Diddy and a lot of voice manipulation. Slow and simmering, maybe even sexy if you’re inclined to believe Diddy is capable. There is a simple digital horn, with a really strange wah wah effect.  The track sounds like what musicians dabbling in electronic sounds tried to pass off as futuristic back in the 70’s which actually gives “Shades” a dated feel.

Then Timberlake raps, sorta.  Its more rap than Wayne’s passage but still comes off as spoken word-like when he isn’t giving Drake style punchlines here and there. At least he recognizes the style theft.  Timberlake gives a shout to Mr. Graham at the end.

The music is then dropped completely, leaving just layered vocals.  Then it’s over.  Thank goodness.

The whole point of this exercise in extra sexy is to let some young lady know that she is loved so much, Diddy would even take his shades off for her (That’s after he pours gasoline on his heart to light her cigarette.  Yes, he really says that.) I’m not sure who this would appeal to but I vote that he keeps his Shades on.

Who knows, maybe it will grown on me.  Stranger things have happened. The rumor is this may be on Diddy’s album Last Train To Paris, but that information may be as wrong as well… this song.
