After 20 years in the game, you expect to see certain patterns with an artist’s output. Similar beats or subject matter. Perhaps albums and songs begin to blend together in your mind. De La Soul has always managed to stay conceptually buoyant and fresh while maintaining their love for the music. They have been masters of the art of reinventing since deading their initial Daisy Age on their second album, so it comes as no surprise that they are once again rocking on a different level on this new track, “The Return of the DST”
It immediately stands out among its contemporaries with its dense lyricism, necessitating pauses and rewinds to pick apart their layered writing. There is no abundance of punchlines and two line rhyme leaning, nor is there the oversaturation of “like” or “as” to coplete a stanza or to connect ideas. Their connectivity exists on many levels. They open up with a shout out to the mighty Zulu Nation along with a robotic echo that ads some new millenium panache. Posdnous puts rappers on notice that he would never ever have someone write for him and the day that he does, you’ll be hearing him rapping his epilogue. Dave himself adds a bit of melody to his flow and pounds out line after line of freshness bouncing from insurance allegories to popcorn. There is nothing in in the way of mic passing a la EPMD, just consecutive rips.
The Soul resurrect and pay homage to a routine first brought back by OC and Freddie Foxx on the track “Win The G”. the routine originally was from the Fantastic ROmantic 5 the classic group that went head to head with the legendary Cold Crush and actually took the win in a battle. So in one song they, manage to wreck the mic, give you a history lesson, and maintain their level of illness. That’s why they have lasted 20 years and can probably see another 20, although that may be a bit tough on their hips. Go for the gusto before it goes home with De La. Enjoy.
