And The Beat Goes On:Chris Wants Some Love, Papoose Wants Some Respect And Theophilus Wants Some Shrimp And Rice

By shelz.

I was sitting here watching Nicki Minaj on Ustream calling random folks to say hey when I had a little epiphany.  Do you remember Dexter’s Laboratory? Dexter had a sister named Dee Dee who would start yelling indiscriminately during conversations.  That’s it. That’s who Nicki sounds like.  She’s not Harajuku Barbie.  She’s Harajuku Dee Dee.  Glad that’s settled.

Anyway, while I was wasting time pondering that, Delonte West still has no job, Naomi Campbell is getting rave reviews for her understated yet chic outfit while people totally forget she’s testifying at some world crime tribunal and Maia Campbell is still performing for the cameras, just not in the way she should be.

It’s been a rough week, for everyone except Chris Brown who seems to be making some sort of “I was lost, but now I’m found” comeback.  I don’t really know if I wish him luck as much as I wish him a way to make better choices, but no need to beat that horse again.  We’ve all been contrite at some point.

That leads me to this week in beat biters and dope style takers.  I don’t know how necessarily, but that’s where I’m going, so come on. First up is Chris Brown.

We find young Mr. Brown singing over Nicki’s “Your Love” which we all know by now is a jack of Annie Lennox’s “No More I Love You’s.” Some of these lyrics are very amusing.  Telling a young lady you want to go all the way would be cute in its juvenile charm if we didn’t know CB can be a purveyor of really adult nastiness.  He says this girl has an ass like Nicki Minaj even though from what I hear, Nicki Minaj doesn’t have an ass like Nicki Minaj. Oh and he wants to do his shit to you.  No restroom. Wow that’s bad.

Next we have Papoose over the nails on a blackboard goodness of Dipset’s “Salute.” I would tell you about Pap and his super lyricism, but I won’t live through the beat so you’re on your own.  Good luck.

Moving on we have Party Supplies featuring Theo Martins on a dance oriented shift on Kanye’s “Power.”  They smack up, flip and rub down the beat into a club piece that could probably get the shyest of bar flies off her stool.  I’m playing it right now and my neighbor can feel that thump.  Ciroc and lemonade anyone?

Curt@!n$ comes in fourth with his “Letter to the People Pt. 4.” And yes there are three previous installments.  This time he has jacked the Wu’s “Heaterz” which makes sense because the song is from his most recent mixtape The Dissertation (the Wu Thesis).  He talks about snakes in the grass and keeping your inner circle exclusive to the fam.  There are some conspiracy theory taglines (Zeitgeist, Behold a Pale Horse) but Curt@!n$ comes off more sincere than your average rapper who tosses those words more for affect than honest narrative.

Last but not least is And The Beat Goes On regular Theophilus London and with him he’s brought The Dap Kings.  The conglomerate has given a huge rousing nod to Nat King Cole with their adaptation of “Calypso Blues.”  It’s big and energetic; definitely sound dance floor material for those who really know how to dance.
