Planet Ill Breakdown — 14 July 2010

Skyzoo got his salvation in 2009 and has been on the road ever since, tearing down shows with Raekwon, Ghostface and his own Duck Down family. Not one to rest on his laurels, Sky has an upcoming project with producer ILLMIND                                 entitled Live From The Tape Deck. The October release is intended to be a throwback to the tape era hiss, Dolby and all, when albums and mixtapes were more complete because you couldn’t just hop from song to song with the press of a button. The first gem from the collaboration is called “Frisbee.”

The operative point of the track and its title is to “see if you can catch it.” As such, Skyzoo employs a relentless flow full of lyrical morsels and alliterative device, challenging the listener to not only see if they can catch what he’s saying , but also whether they can rap along. Skyzoo’s delivery and diction are crisp and everyman, yet distinctly Brooklyn, like a Coney Island hot dog.

The beat is urgent and full of inertia; pushing forward like the Juggernaut with no signs of slowing down. Its motion presses the rapper to keep coming with line upon line, and would wear out all but the toughest spitters. For the sake of the song and our ill minds, Skyzoo is more than up to the challenge.

If this is what we can look forward to in October, then start rubbing your hands and get ready to take your mind back to the days when you waited to drop that money for DJ Clue, Doo Wop, Ron G and any other DJ that had more to offer than screaming all over songs that are from people’s albums and not the “exclusives” they profess. “Frisbee.” See if you can catch everything. Enjoy.
