Planet Ill Breakdown — 07 June 2010

The moon is always full for us, the road is always clear.  That’s not… what you want to hear.

The line taken literally from a song about vampires is self-explanatory.  However, any figurative, creative spin can find this as a clear warning.  There is no peak or lull in our power.  We will find no obstacles on our path.  We are an ever-present danger and there is absolutely nothing that can be done about it.  Sucks to be you.

Then drop this line into a slow, brooding sonic landscape that’s heavy on dark atmospherics, random stabbing digital  slices and a guitar reminiscent of a live or die Mexican standoff and you have one hell of a menacing track.

Alison Mosshart’s matter-of-fact delivery is the cherry on top of the cake as she explains in no uncertain terms that she is the snake, you are the bait and you will get got.  Her vocals follow the lines of the track perfectly and she keeps the emotion in check.  Being an eternal creature of evil is business, never personal.

Even the title evokes an ill-fated occurrence.  The rolling burning tire is always that last shot you get in the movie after the horrific explosion.  Once you see that, you know no one is coming out alive.

All of the elements added together equals The Dead Weathers’ contribution to the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga’s latest installment, Eclipse. The first two movies weren’t really known for the edginess of their soundtracks.  However, the guy in charge of the music flipped the script this go round and “Rolling In On a Burning Tire” is definite proof of that.

Dope.
