Planet Ill Breakdown — 04 June 2010

Big Boi is steady putting in work lately that has him rapidly rising out of the Outkast shadow on his road to his next album Lucious Leftfoot.  His latest, “General Patton” finds him fully draped in the legendary status that he has achieved through years of putting in work and people are going to go apeshit over this.

The production (Big Boi & Jbeatz) is grandiose with a Buckingham Palace feeling of scale with all the trumpets and the haunting Omen- like chants that add a heightened level of drama. Once the beat drops, those double snares roll in and the 808’s drop from beneath the record bounded by the haunts and horns. The breaks have a subtle electric guitar and are simply constructed.

Mr. Patton (or General as it were) has placed the South firmly on his back and is denouncing anyone that has something to say, taking it back to the days of the 95 Source awards and their “the South got something to say” speech and echoing the sentiment of “Chonkyfire”. He speaks of MC’s wackness ruining his appetite and of his days of youth in Savannah while reclaiming his and 3stacks’s collective legacy, presumably as they prepare to reunite. Big Rube closes the song out with one of his trademark monologues and a weird skit that will have you thinking very differently when you hear the words “David Blaine”.

Pardon the pun but it seems like the son of Chico Dusty is pulling out the big guns this time around, rapping over a sample of the Solti opera.  Haters and Andre dickriders take note. He is significant. Big Boi.  General Patton.  Salute.

Shout to Rap Radar.
