Planet Ill Breakdown — 17 April 2010

Fresh out of the pen, T.I. has both a mixtape and a new album in the works and we should be seeing both in the next few months.  Now that we are done with the perfunctory welcome me back song, Mr. Harris is tipping his hand a bit and showing what we can expect from all of the projects he has promised us. The most recent drops is his The Dream assisted love song, “Love Again.”

The track is tinged with Prince’s musical style.  There’s that stabbing piano in the background a la “The Beautiful Ones.”  Of course there is some bass and over top, some synthesized horns.  You know from the title and the intro of the track, this is for the ladies. Well, some of them.

If you listen to the lyrics, it really is a scandalous, drama-filled and quite unromantic situation wrapped in love song chords.  The romanticism is tarnished with T.I. going on about seeing the puddy through the panties and his pipe being so rock hard, Medusa must have looked at it.  To add insult to injury, The Dream says he wants to “… hold you all through the motherfukkin night.” Sigh

Oh there is also a part where the woman these men are singing about, the object of their desire, admits her man (yes, she’s creepin’)will probably beat her ass for messing around, but that’s just an ass whopping she will have to take. Wow. Does knowing she’s going home to certain domestic violence put hearts in your eyes?

All of this less-than-tender musing is juxtaposed against a pretty, airy chorus about a woman who says she just wants to fall in love again. There are several mentions of being in love in this song, but the thought process behind the lyrics of this cut speaks volumes to what R&B sees as a love song and what we have come to accept as such.   I mean if you are in love with a young woman would you be telling all your boys, “You should see her from the back!” Just asking.

Anyway, the bottom line is the song has a great package.  Dream’s production is a bit over-processed for my taste but still enjoyable.  The lovey-dovey sound to the track invites you in and then bam! You’re hit with some of the most unromantic lyricism ever. Then again, considering this isn’t anything abnormal I guess young ladies will take this over naked misogyny.  I suppose I would too.
