What’s the word Planet Ill fam during these first few days of April 2010?
After what felt like a week of April Fool’s jokes that were all too real (Tiger Woods’ heaux getting a spread in Vanity Fair magazine, this entire Kat Stacks broad mess, Hype Williams sinking to a f*** effort video with Nikki Minaj for a f*** effort song, etc.), it’s time to hit heads with another installment of Indiesent Exposure.
For those who are new to this section, Indiesent Exposure is the weekly music column where folks drop some FREE music downloads & information about quality artists from the independent music community who deserve more exposure and props for keeping their various genres lively & non-cookie cutter status .
Hopefully by each post, Planet Ill’s Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio and TV airwaves’ definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.
If you like what you hear & download in this section (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc. At the end of the day, music artists need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
To blast off this week’s Indiesent Exposure session, we have some 2 albums/ mix selections that feature some new Hip-Hop, Soul, Electronica and Rock vibes.
If you like what you hear, support the music artists since at the end of the day, we all need to eat – purchase their product, attend the live shows, spread the word to others, etc.
Please check out everything below from these talented artists and the Planet Ill family know what you think when you get the chance – hope you enjoy everything!
Let’s get into it:
I ran into Soulful!’s music through recommendations from some of my music connections in the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) about a few weeks ago.
The young Alexandria, VA based producer just got legal enough to cop a drink at the bar, but the 21 year old talent has been crafting Hip-Hop and Soul for the masses for over 5 years.
With the DMV Hip-Hop community getting on the rise with international & mainstream recognition, Soulful!’s already put in work with some recognized heavy hitters from the area, including critically acclaimed Inner Loop Records’ K-Beta and Diamond District’s X.O.
The Mellow Life LP is the latest work by Soulful! Through his talent and creativity on this beat tape, he displays why he even is able to hold on to his moniker & have listeners seriously take it to heart.
You can feel through each track both the technical skill and passion behind the crafting of each song, from the straight ahead soul layouts to tracks that give you an 1990s NYC Hip-Hop feel while not sounding the least bit dated.
With everything from posse anthems to mellow ride out grooves on display, I’m waiting to see how many of the beats from The Mellow Life LP end up on some music artist’s official releases or mixtapes in the near future. The few vocal guest appearances on The Mellow Life LP makes the listener fully aware how the proper talent can do right by Soulful!’s skills and make some fantastic music.
This release should be a wake up call on how to meld the new technology with the old school mentality of being creative for any up and coming producer.
If this is just the beginning of Soulful!’s musical journey, there is plenty more goodness in the works to come. Hopefully, this young man will continue to stay in the business of making audio excellence for all to enjoy for very long time.
Find out more about what’s good with Soulful!’s latest music projects and other good happenings either over at the official Inner Loop Records website (http://www.InnerLoopUncut.com), his official MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/SoulfulDMV) or his official Twitter page (http://www.twitter.com/SoulfulDMV).

Next up, the folks over at URB ALT (a really nice resource of news, downloads and other things with the international Black Rock/Black Alternative music scene) have recently dropped their second sampler of international diverse talent.
The music in display on URB ALT Sampler – Dos features both indie music acts on the come up along with new tracks from some legends doing their thing like Gil Scott-Heron & Me’shell Ndegeocello.
This continuous hour long music mix flows very well, especially since the tracks range from straight zone out music to some dance grooves of the Funk, Soul, Metal, Electronica and Experimental variety.
All of the acts have their individual websites on the cover of the sampler, so if you’re feeling it, reach out to them with some kind words, see what other projects they have out and whatever else is good to support!
