Good afternoon and welcome to the first Sick Sunday of 2010. Here at the Planet we spent most of our week wrapping up the year end, with most of our heavy hitters pulling yeoman work in delivering quality, relevant material to close out both the year and the decade.
DJ Fusion delivered the first blow with the Indiesent Exposure 2009 Wrap-Up. She delivered her message with such aplomb that she inadvertently knocked out a couple of ideas we were going to flesh out. Read it. It’s a much needed message especially for those fighting their way in the industry and to listeners who are constantly searching for depth. Shelz delivered a brilliantly done Classic Clash which pitted legendary grunge rock bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam head-to-head at the height of their powers.
Our tech maven Elianne Halbersberg showed you how you could build your own studio with technology that we cover here in our Gear Up 2009 Wrap-Up tech section. She is one woman that knows her stuff implicitly and what she delivers is very manageable for burgeoning producers/musicians who are serious about their craft.
Following that, we sat down with the mighty Souls of Mischief and talked about their new album, their legacy, Bay Area Hip-Hop and the responsibility of veteran rappers. We then gave you in your face concert coverage of the EPMD Reunion with DJ Scratch and Onyx live at BB King’s earlier in the week.
Planet Ill Sports MVP The Rowdy One gave you the 2009 Out Of Bounds Sport Wrap-Up full of Tebows and Tigers and Sids, oh my. Malice Intended’s piece on the Rise of the Black Icon in 2009 chronicled Obama’s ascent, Tiger’s descent, MJ’s death and Jay-Z’s life. From there shelz became a writer on’ roids, pulling the bulk of the closing 2009 coverage, wrapping it up with a look at the year in freestyle, and Planet Ill’s closing note on the commemoration of Def Jam’s 25th Anniversary with a retrospective look at Rick and Rush while we collaborated on a thumbnail look at Def history.
DJ Fusion stepped back into play with her regularly-scheduled Indiesent Exposure while yours truly gave all the new comers an education on what Planet Ill is all about. It’s your jumping point, take advantage. This will be a very interesting 2010. Walk with us. Now, on to the music.
Teriyaki Boyz Feat. Jay-Z-This Is The Life (video above)
Aside from the obvious relevance of Jay-z this track was actually submitted for BP3 but ultimately not used. It’s produced by Magneedo 7 with Real 4 Real of the Internationalz on the hook. Some way or another the track ended up in the hands of the Teriyaki Boyz who kept the beat intact and left real on the hook. In any event, props are due to the boys we covered many months ago. We look forward more from them in the future.
The Outlawz-U Don’t Like That 01 U Don’t Like That
We haven’t heard from these guys in a minute and while they still get respect for their Tupac relation, this song is very derivative of “dope boy song x” from Atlanta, complete with that familiar retread beat and cats yelling AYE! in the background. We’ve heard better stuff from these guys, but it’s not trash. Just very regular.
Papoose- 09 Obituary 09 OBITUARY1-PAPOOSE-CHINO 1
Papoose does his version of Skillz year end wrap-up but only with the dearly departed. As an emcee Papoose’s strong points were his relentlessness and his devil-may-care fury. This slow, plodding song removes those tools from his arsenal and hampers his delivery. A cool song, but nothing spectacular. One and done.
Snoop Dogg Ft. Nelly, Pharrell & Charlie Wilson-Feet Don’t Fail Me Now Snoop Dogg ft. Nelly, Pharrell & Charlie Wilson – Feet Don’t Fail Me Now – MP3WAXX
What looks on paper to be “Beautiful” revisited with a bit on Nelly on the side is actually not as good. Nelly sounds very old and the beat is not one of Pharrell’s best considering the body of work he has with Snoop. It’s cute but not something to make you put that drink down and haul ass to the dance floor. Pass.
Nina B-Fly Fly__prod._6th_Sense_
Cute song, and a bit youngish sounding for the BK femcee, but the lyrics are solid, her clothes stay on, and there’s no tough talk which is half the battle these days. I prefer to hear her over muddier beats and guitars but this song is not a fail. The hook is long but catchy. Pass
Young Buck-Steroids 01_Steroidz
Young Buck is back popping wild s**t. It’s kind of silly to hear this after listening to him cry on the phone and all that but never let it be said we didn’t give it a fair listen. Buck is outta pocket with the line “They slid past ya and hit Jam Master” and most of the song is generally weak. If 50 was strong it would be weak, but with 50 weak it’s kinda like people dissing Suge Knight after the barber beatdown or Tyson after Douglas. It’ s not the same fight. Tre lame. Buck is going to need something else to get back in the saddle. It’ s not poppin.’
The Knux-Fuck You 05 Fuck You
A very noisy joint from the Knux that isn’t for the squeamish. Sometimes its good to hear stuff like this just for a change of pace. It reminds me of the early 90s when groups just had no shame and profanity just took over songs. It’s not a bad song but please don’t play it around the kids. There’s no real theme to it except to say that if you don’t like The Knux…
And that’s it for this week’s Sick Sunday. Make sure you match your picks against The Rowdy One’s and tune in later for the Classic Clash. Peace.
