Welcome ladies and jellybeans to another week of Out of Bounds on Planet Ill. We’re down to our Final Four for the 2009-10 NFL Playoffs. After Sunday’s games, we’ll know who’ll be in South Florida for Super Bowl XLIV.
Will there be an early Mardi Gras for the New Orleans Saints? Speaking of the Saints, can the offspring of Archie Manning lead the Colts to their 2nd Super Bowl appearance in four years? Can the 2010 version of the New York Sack Exchange, with their rookie coach and quarterback get the Jets to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1969? Or can the Mississippi Gunslinger lead the Purple People Eaters of Minnesota to their 5th Super Bowl appearance? Well, we’ll look for the answers to that and more in the Championship Weekend Edition of Out of Bounds.
Speaking of the Vikings, did any of you hear the song ”Purple and Gold” that Prince wrote for the Minnesota Vikings?
Be a fan, but don’t be a fan that puts out crappy songs about your favorite team. You could combine the movies Graffiti Bridge and Under the Cherry Moon, and it still wouldn’t be as bad as that song. This isn’t a fight song. It’s a “grab your girlfriend, head out to Lover’s Leap, and make out in the back of a yellow, 1970 Chevy Camaro” song. If that’s a fight song, then I wouldn’t want to go to war on the field with that song leading the charge. YEESH!!!
Now, there’s no playing around today. Today we have serious business to attend to. Today we find out which two teams will be in South Florida for Super Bowl XLVI. So as always, without further ado, let’s look at my picks for today’s games and a trip to the Super Bowl.

Back in Week 16, when the Jets faced the Colts in Indianapolis, Colts head coach, Jim Caldwell, took his starters out of the game in the 2nd half so they can be begin their resting process for the playoffs. People were in uproar because with a Colts loss, an undefeated season was out the window. Also, the loss would help the Jets because they needed to win their last two games of the regular season to get into the playoffs. With the win in Indy and then their win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17, the Jets were in the playoffs. Now the Jets will return to the scene of the crime from Week 16 in today’s game for the AFC Championship and a trip to the Super Bowl.
With the Colts resting their starters for the last two games, they gave up the opportunity to go undefeated for the regular season. However, that’s alright because being undefeated wasn’t their goal, getting to the Super Bowl and winning the title is their goal and sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get what you want. Besides, we saw what happened the last time a team went undefeated in the regular season and made it to the Super Bowl. How’s that 18-1 working out for fans of the New England Patriots?
The Jets, the Cinderella of this year’s playoffs, have been playing smart football during the playoffs. They run the ball well, QB Mark Sanchez has been managing the game well, and finally, the league’s number one defense has been showing the world why they’re worthy of the distinction. They say offense wins fans, defense wins championships and if the Jets defense can get to Peyton Manning and slow down the Colts offense, football fans will see Gang Green in South Florida on February 7th in the Super Bowl.
As much as this pains me to say this, I have to go with the Jets in this game. I know I’m taking a chance and going out on a limb here, but the Jets are riding a high and their defense is on another level right now. I know that Peyton Manning is surgical at the line of scrimmage with his audibles, but the Jets have momentum on their side. We’ve seen what momentum can do for teams in the playoffs, especially teams from New York. Being a New Yorker, I’m not a Jets supporter, but I know a good defense when I see one and Jets have that defense. Yes, when the Jets played the Colts back in Week 16, they won because the starters were out. But that was a month ago and we’re in the playoffs, with a shot at the Super Bowl on the line.
So, as I type this with a lil vomit in my throat, I’m going with the 2010 New York Sack Exchange and Fireman Ed to win today’s game and repeat the upset of Super Bowl III. Let me hear it Ed!!!!

Hey kids, do you like high scoring offenses? Do you like to see the ball get thrown all over the place? Do you like QBs who have rifles for arms? Well the NFC Championship is where all the hip kids will be for such a game.
Remember when the season began and former Vikings QB and Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton threw Brett Favre under the bus:
How’s that working out for Tarkenton? Now Favre and the Vikings are one win away from going to the Super Bowl and have been striking blows against their opponents as if they were the Mighty Thor. The Gods in Valhalla are looking down with great pride.
The Saints clearly disposed their moniker of “The Ain’ts” with a high powered offense and a much improved defense this season. But can that offense match-up with one of the league’s best defenses?
As great an offense the Saints have, the Vikings defense is nasty. The Jets defense is good, the Vikings defense is just “mean”. They come at you when you least expect it and they follow the ball better than any other team on the defensive side of the ball. When you balance that with a solid offense being lead by who many consider to be the greatest player at the QB position, that’s a difficult feat to accomplish. But be aware, this is gonna be a high scoring game folks on both sides of the ball.
The Saints and their fans have endured hardship for years on and off the football field. The success of the Saints have been one of the highlights for their fans in the wake of rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and a Saints trip to the Super Bowl would make Mardi Gras look like Midnight Mass at St. Patrick Cathedral on Christmas. As much as I would love to see the Saints make it to the Super Bowl, the Vikings are the better team because of their defense and that defense will lead them to the Super Bowl.
So there it is; my picks for the Super Bowl XLIV, the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Jets. Now let’s sit back and watch how this weekend will unfold for Super Bowl XLIV. but before I got, let me ask you this: Who do you want to see in Super Bowl XLIV?
