The End Of The World Is Coming. Are You Ready?
By G.I.N.A. (Game Is Not Allowed)
I hear the end of the world is coming, December 21, 2012 to be exact. The ancient Mayan civilization, whose calendar ends on this supposed doomsday has predicted our catastrophic end. Will this turn out to be like the bogus scare of Y2K? We were all set for technological disaster on January 1, 2000 and nothing. I still got cans of tuna and bottles of water from that. Apparently, a series of natural disasters will leave only a handful of survivors. Sounds like a solid idea for a sci-fi movie (2012 the movie is actually set for release in November of this year). However, there are thousands of people worldwide who are taking this ancient prediction as reality.
It seems every generation has an “end of days” warning. Folks have been standing in the streets, probably since Jesus walked the earth, promising the end of the world was near. Most of us rush by these self-proclaimed “prophets” concerned only with getting through today, with no time to hear about what could be looming on the horizon. This doomsday proclamation however has takers: websites, members only survival groups, and countdown clocks all in preparation for our last days. People are gearing up and learning primitive survival techniques in a quest to stay alive in a post-Apocalyptic world.
With all the preparation, it seems like people have forgotten about the bigger picture. What about God? The creator of all things didn’t give us an end date but the Mayans can? Let’s just say, for the sake of argument, that 2012 is the end of it all. We’re spending thousands of dollars to preserve our bodies rather than our spiritual selves I haven’t read a scenario yet that includes Godly people forming groups to help get souls to heaven. There are no bible study groups, no one teaching the Word so that IF this were true, folks could live eternally after they perished physically. In the end if it is your time to go, there is no stopping it. No amount of gear can save us, it just prolongs the inevitable. Shouldn’t there be preparations for our spirits as well?
If life as we know it should come to an end, would we want to live beyond that? If there are any survivors, would you want to be part of the crew who has to live like cavemen again? Could those of us who live in big cities survive? With our fancy cars and expensive lattes, could we trek through woods and debris, live off the land and fend for ourselves in the wilderness. Would we be able to function without the basic skills that have been muted and deaded by technology? I for one can’t start my day without a hot shower and steaming cup of tea (doomed, spoiled city girl dies from lack of amenities at the beginning of the movie).
When I searched for “2012” hundreds of resources were available with tons of information on everything from month-by-month analysis of the happenings in 2012, to stories of a comet colliding with earth which has long been theorized as the cause of our destruction. The information is amazing but one common thread remains: it is all speculation. Many sites admit that indeed,it’s not the end of days but the end of a cycle within the Mayan calendar. Furthermore the end of the cycle is not marked as catastrophic but a new beginning. Could our desire for sensationalism be the driving force behind our addiction to doom? We love disaster movies, whether they be flood waters engulfing Wall Street and nearly swallowing up the NY public library in Manhattan or aliens taking control of our planet, we stay perched on the edges of our seats, ready for the next calamity.
The truth is, no one knows when the end will come. Yet with all the work we put into trying to figure it out and prepare for the Apocalypse, not enough people are thinking about preparing within. What about what God says? What about the Bible? What about getting right so that IF this is all true we will only endure a physical death? I will admit I don’t have the relationship I want with Him but if December 21, 2012 is the impending date of my demise, I’ll forgo wasting money on things and invest in what I can take with me: faith in God. In the end, nothing else matters.
