Sick Sunday 10/11/2009: Busta Rhyming, Joss Stone & Nas, Skyzoo and More!
Good morning and welcome back to the sickest Sunday on the net. Today we once again have representation from many quarters, bringing you material from signed and unsigned, indie and major, and from different areas across the map. We have a full day here at the Planet. We went late night with Meshell Ndegeocello, we went early for the NFL Week 5 Picks, we stop here of course, and we’ll close Sunday with a Classic Movie Clash: Menace To Society Vs. Boys In The Hood.
Make sure you check out some of the work from our writers this week, where shelz broke down Lupe’s response to MTV’s much pandered Hottest MC List. G.I.N.A. gave props to good fathers, and Fawn Renee beat the entire street with a review of Mario’s new work DNA. Deisey’s Angels get busy, indeed. In addition, DJ Fusion dropped another brilliant episode of Indiesent Exposure, and tech writer Elianne Halbersberg made life a whole lot easier for producers. Don’t ever let someone say women are lacking in Hip-Hop because The Planet has them and they are writers of mass destruction that know their music/tech cold.
We also took a real look at why Barack Obama’s Nobel Prize was a valid decision. Make sure you check Hot Rod’s picks for NFL week 5 before you call your bookies and check those pick ‘em leagues, and get ready for Planet Ill Radio coming soon to a computer near you. And now, on with the show!

I’m sure you’ve figured out by now that I’m a fan of most of the MC’s from Duck Down, not due to any particular affiliaion, but because they have made a decided attempt to make adult Hip-Hop that doesn’t have to necessarily be about car notes and soccer moms. These three get busy on unseen levels with P Body closing it out with some hilarious, if non-pc lines. Thumbs up!
Joss Stone Feat. Nas-”Governmentalist”

Neither of these artists are strangers to controversy, and as consequence their music often carries a brazenness that if not afforded to artists that move their kinds of units. Nas in particular is no stranger to raging against the machine. He flat out annihilates this track. Stone does a solid job lyrically, and the tracks give s a feel of that old south where being colored was not all good. Very woodsy feel. Overall dopeness.
Busta Rhymes Feat. J. Holiday- “Hits For Days”

In keeping with the Hip-Hop/R&B collaboration there we get to the opposite end where Busta does most of the heavy lifting and Hoiday is mainly garnish on the hook. It’s a good return back to the music after his poorly recieved last album. We’ll chalk it up to a misfire because this song proves that his lyrical muscles are still intact. A win.
The Internationalz-”Push Me”

The North Carolina trio is back with an EP “Walls That Bleed,” which was commissioned for the score for a PBS Special on civil rights. The track is full of instrumentation and topic-wise broaches subjects of race, police brutality, economic debilitation, and the push forward for Black empowerment. It’s a quick hitter with all three getting in and out of there verses leaving space for the higpaced drum and the organwork to finish the job. More goodness.
Noah Jones Feat. Nipsey Hustle-”Streets Keep Starving”

Two members of the New West take it to the stage in this ode to the straving streets. There isn’t much new territory ventured here, but for rising rappers they are on top of this beat, their deliveries are more than adequate and they sound good together. Hustle in particular sounds really sharp on this and if this is how the West is coming over a kinda Dr. Dre-Lite beat, then this movement will have some legs on it. Good Work from the duo. I look forward to hearing more of them together as they complement each other.
Royce Da 5′9 Feat. Bun B & Joell Ortiz-”Hood Love”

DJ Premier returns with a vengeance laying the track for these veterans to get busy on. The staggered piano is punctuated by a string and Primo’s signature drums. What’s dope is the contrast of voices and styles among the emcees, with Royce’s secure arrogance giving way to Bun B’s deep, measured voice and finally landing with Ortiz’ latino-tinged Brooklyn accent. What’s even better is that the two Slaughterhouse representers managed to pull back and allow the song to develop without trying to overkill it. Well done.
Del The Funky Homo Sapien & Tame One

Two pieces of two legendary crews get together for this nifty joint. Neither does anything to dilute the rep of Heiro or The Artifacts. Tame One does kick the overdone “how many cats are my sons” thing in his first verse but it’s easily forgiveable and forgotten by the destruction of his second verse. Del represents throughout, serving notice that he gets it effortlessly in. Beat is adequate but forgetable. Solid.
That’s it for this week’s edition of Sick Sunday. Keep checking us out during the week and enjoy the balance of your three day weekend. Peace out Brussel Sprouts.
