Friday Fix: Beans Returns, Raekwon Readies, West Coast Ice Cream

It’s a Friday afternoon and just about everywhere in the country is undergoing a massive heatwave.  Mixtapes are dropping like groupies, the 4th quarter rush for album releases is getting closer and low and behold, we couldn’t wait till Sick Sundays because there was just too much flavor to hold from you until then.  Unlike other sites, we’re not going to eek them out. We’ll put as many together as we can, and tell you whether they all bummed up or they get the thumb up.

Beans-In The Ghetto (Video Above)

Beans returns with a vengeance with an ominously chilling track chronicling the ills of, you guessed it, the ghetto.  The hunger is still present, his diction is crisp and he’s not leaning on his flow, just telling his tale with grizzly efficiency. You can feel the authenticity and wonder to yourself if it’s actually a good thing that he “knows what he knows.” To top it off we get a lil snippet of more to come on the album. Resounding thumbs up.

Drake Feat. Nipsey Hustle 01 Killer – Drake ft. Nipsey Hussle

Drake continues on the road to redemption after apologizing for throwing a certain label executive under the bus, and working hard to make us forget the BET Awards fiacsco and his stage mishaps. He takes a page from Rick Ross: when they’re talking about stuff that ain’t musical, put out more music.  This is a slower than you’re used to, devoid of the slick talking but perhaps a bit too predictable of flow. Nipsey rides shotgun to gain a bit more notoriety and his year long grinding for fame adds another notch in the belt following his latest mixtape.  The track bumps for a few plays but doesn’t have much longevity.  Solid

Mims Feat. Tech9ne- Rock N Rollin mimsfeat.techn9ne-rocknrollin-DIRTY

He told you this was why he rocked but in case you forgot be brought along indie legend Tech9ne to push the flame to another intensity.  Tech flat out bodybags this guitar heavy killer of a beat.  Good song, no matter whose album it ends up a part of.  Mims takes it back to his roots before he became pop pariah for “saying nothing on a track.”  Well it ain’t about nothing anymore. Thumbs up.

Rob Viktum/Donwill of Tanya Morgan- Aight’ New Drink EP Aight, New Drink Snippet Tape

Many emcees often feel constrained by the musical identity of their group and chafe under the umbrella without spreading their own musical wings.  Tanya Morgan emcee Donwill is not one of those and this venture is a taste of what he has on his soon to drop EP. If the whole product is like this then that’s an A-plus win and another victory for Hip-Hop you can’t outgrow.  Thumbs Up

Nipsey Hustle, Snoop Dogg, Jim Jones & Souljah Boy  Ice Cream Paint Job-Clean Remix(West

Motley mix of rappers gets it in with varying styles and delivery.  I gotta say this is dope, even though on surface value, some of the names many people may consider suspect.  I like it, it bumps, good mixture of styles and there are a couple surprises.  Definitely better than the sum of it’s parts.  Passable.

Raekwon Feat. Ghost, Deck, Meth, & GZA- Run Away 03. Raekwon – Run Away Ft. Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Method Man & Gza

Wholesome back to basics clansmanship.  Everybody goes in hard enough to make you forget all the whining they did over that whole Buddens crap.  Songs like this are why we celebrate their legacy as one of the fiercest group of flat out emcees.  This is from his mixtape Cuban Rebellion, perhaps the last appetizer before OB4CL Part 2.  Some banging s**t to get your mouth watered.

That’s all for today, keep checking in to Planet Ill as we ramp up pressure to make this a better landscape for you to grow up and grow out into Hip-Hop.

Peace
